Description
The aristocratic Edouard Manet and the working class, Victorine Meurent, his model, share a passion for art. Victorine's bitter struggle to emerge from her background contrasts sharply with the esoteric exchanges between Manet and his friend Baudelaire on the nature of modernism.

A very special story
I bought this novel for my son who is at an arts college. He read it quickly, and saying how much he enjoyed it, he passed it on to me. It's a wondefully moving story, full of interesting facts. The style is straightforward and almost stark, but very powerful - quite a change from all those books overburdened with metaphors. My next holiday will be in Paris. I must go and see all those Manet picutres.
A profound story
I very much enjoyed this gentle but most intirguing story of the relationship between Manet and his young model. I thought it much better reserached that A Girl with a Pearl Earring and absolutely wonderful in its period and place detail. Very well written sex scenes.
Hooray for Victorine
Loved this novel: the painter and his model tell the story in their own words. Beautiful sections on the way a visual mind works. Baudelaire is a hoot. If only reproductions of the paintings were included...
